Dahab or Hurghada? We Visited Both and Here's Where We'd Return
Dahab was our winner after visiting both, but Hurghada is the easier choice if you want a resort-style Red Sea break, organised boat trips and a convenient stop after Luxor. Dahab felt smaller, calmer and far more like somewhere we could settle into for a week. Hurghada gave us the bigger day on the water.
We stayed two nights in each during our 15-day Egypt trip in October 2025. That was enough to understand how different they feel, but not enough for either place. I would allow at least three nights in Hurghada and four or five in Dahab if the Red Sea is a major part of your trip.
Dahab or Hurghada: which should you choose?
Choose Dahab for a laid-back town, a walkable waterfront, brilliant food and easy access to the Blue Hole. Choose Hurghada for larger hotels, beach clubs, boat trips and an easier road connection from Luxor.

Our honest answer: if we could choose only one now, we would return to Dahab. If it were a first Egypt trip already passing through Luxor, Hurghada would be easier to add without losing a full day to the longer transfer.
Important for current planning: we visited in October 2025, but travel advice can change quickly. As of 2 August 2026, Australian Smartraveller advises travellers to reconsider their need to travel to South Sinai outside the southern coastal area of Sharm el Sheikh. Dahab is in South Sinai. Read the current Egypt travel advice and your own government's advice before booking. Hurghada is on Egypt's mainland Red Sea coast, but the overall advice for Egypt is still to exercise a high degree of caution.
Where should you stay in Dahab or Hurghada?
We used apartments in both places because kitchens, extra space and a lounge make full-time travel feel a little more normal. We love eating out, but we do not want to live in holiday mode every night for 18 months straight.
Our Hurghada pick: Redcon Suites
We booked our actual Hurghada apartment at the last minute and paid A$75.84 total for two nights and two people. It was spacious, central and had an incredible ocean view.
Redcon Suites is the practical Booking.com alternative I would compare. We have not stayed there, but it stood out for its central location, apartment-style rooms and rooftop sea view. At the time of this review it was rated 9.4 on Booking.com from more than 4,000 reviews. It suits travellers who want to explore outside a resort rather than book an all-inclusive bubble.
Our Dahab pick: Skyrock Dahab
Our actual Dahab Airbnb cost A$183.64 total for two nights and two people. We shared it with friends, had our own bathrooms and could walk to cafes, restaurants and Hammer Gym. Our friends loved Dahab so much that they extended their stay after we left.
Skyrock Dahab is the researched option I would compare now. We have not stayed there, but the waterfront setting and apartment style match the relaxed, independent Dahab experience we loved.

What was Hurghada like?
Hurghada felt like a holiday stop built around the Red Sea. We arrived after roughly four hours on the road from Luxor, booked an inexpensive apartment the night before and were genuinely shocked by how close we were to the water.
Our main day was a private speedboat trip with Hurghada Diving Centre. The plan was to find wild dolphins, snorkel and visit a lagoon. The swell was huge, I was drenched within minutes and we initially searched a quieter northern area because there were fewer tour boats.
We did not swim with dolphins. We eventually saw them from the boat further south, which was still exciting, but wild animals do not work to a tour schedule. The day was not a failure. We snorkelled over a thriving reef, stopped in clear shallow water and ate fruit and snacks at a tiny table set up beside the lagoon.
If you want a comparable bookable option, this Hurghada dolphin, snorkelling and three-island yacht trip combines a dolphin search, snorkelling, islands and lunch. It is not the exact private operator we used, and dolphin sightings or swimming are never guaranteed.
What did we like about Hurghada?
- The water was unbelievably clear once the sun came out.
- It was easy to book a full boat day around snorkelling and islands.
- Hurghada fits naturally after Luxor without another flight.
- There are more conventional hotels and resort facilities.
- Mahmya Beach Club gave us somewhere to eat, work and even fit in a massage.
What did we like less about Hurghada?
The internet at our apartment was terrible. We ended up going to a beach club partly because we needed somewhere better to work. That matters when you travel full time, even if it barely registers on a short holiday.
Hurghada also felt more spread out and more like a destination organised around resorts and excursions. That can be exactly what you want. For us, it did not have the same instant neighbourhood feeling as Dahab.
What was Dahab like?
Dahab felt calmer from the moment we arrived. After around nine to ten hours in the car from Hurghada, we walked onto the waterfront and immediately noticed the difference. There was less hassle, people were wandering between cafes and dive shops, and the whole place felt easy.
The morning routine was what made us want longer. We could walk for coffee beside the water, train at Hammer Gym and choose from small restaurants without planning the whole day around a transfer. It felt closer to our normal full-time travel life than a beach resort.
Was the Blue Hole worth visiting?
Yes, the Blue Hole was worth visiting for the reef and the experience of entering water that drops dramatically just off the shore. It did not look extraordinary from the road, but the scale made sense once we snorkelled.
We only spent around ten minutes in the water because our Dahab stay was so short. The reef was incredible, while trained freedivers were descending on ropes into water far beyond anything we would attempt ourselves. Use a reputable operator, follow local rules and do not treat a famous technical diving site casually.
Why did we prefer Dahab's food?
Dahab served some of the best food of our entire Egypt trip. At Nawaem, four of us shared several entrees, mains and drinks for 2,500 Egyptian pounds, around A$20 each during our October 2025 visit. The duck with orange sauce was the table favourite.
Grandpa's Kitchen had the warm, home-style feeling we had been missing, but Zanooba Slow Cooking was our final winner. We ordered hours ahead, arrived to pots still bubbling and ate slow-cooked duck and chicken on our last night in Egypt. It was the meal we were all still talking about when the trip ended.
Is Dahab or Hurghada better for snorkelling?
Hurghada was better for our full boat-day experience, while Dahab was better for the feeling of having famous reef sites directly along the coast. Your choice depends on whether you want an organised day offshore or a town built around shore diving and snorkelling.
In Hurghada, the boat was part of the fun. We covered distance, searched for dolphins and stopped at different areas. In Dahab, the Blue Hole felt more accessible once we had transport to the site, but the shoreline entry was rockier and the focus was much more on diving culture.
We are snorkellers, not technical divers, so this comparison reflects the experience we actually had. Anyone planning certification or deeper diving should choose a licensed operator and compare the specific sites and conditions, not pick a town from a blog headline alone.
Is Dahab or Hurghada better for couples?
Dahab was more romantic for us because we could walk along the water, find dinner without a plan and settle into a slower routine. Hurghada suits couples who want an easy hotel, a polished beach day and organised activities without needing to build every day themselves.
For a honeymoon or a short pampering break, Hurghada's resort choice may win. For a longer trip where cafes, diving, food and atmosphere matter as much as the hotel, we would choose Dahab.
Is Dahab or Hurghada cheaper?
Our Hurghada accommodation was cheaper, but the comparison is not like for like. We paid A$75.84 for two nights in a last-minute Hurghada apartment and A$183.64 for two nights in a larger Dahab Airbnb shared with friends. Both figures were the full two-person amount recorded in October 2025.
Hurghada can become expensive when you choose a resort or add several boat trips. Dahab can be inexpensive day to day, but reaching it may cost more time or money depending on your route. Check live accommodation and transfer prices rather than treating our old booking as a current quote.
Egypt was cash-heavy for us, especially for local rides and smaller places. We used Wise as one of our travel cards, but always carried a backup card and cash after an ATM elsewhere in Egypt retained one of our cards.

Can you visit Dahab and Hurghada on the same trip?
Yes, we visited both, but the transfer used nearly a full day. Our private drive from Hurghada to Dahab took around nine to ten hours and we had been awake since 3 am. The two places look close across the Red Sea, but they sit on different sides of the water.
I would combine them only if you have at least seven days for the Red Sea section. Three nights in Hurghada and four or five in Dahab would make the long transfer feel more worthwhile. With less time, choose the destination that fits the rest of your route:
- Choose Hurghada if you are coming from Luxor.
- Choose Dahab if you are flying through Sharm el Sheikh and current travel advice permits.
- Choose one, not both, if your entire coastal break is four nights or fewer.
Book reputable transport, avoid assuming road journeys will run exactly to schedule and check current official advice before travelling through Sinai.
How many days do you need in Dahab or Hurghada?
We would allow at least three nights in Hurghada and four nights in Dahab. Our two-night stays were rushed in both places.
Two nights in Hurghada gave us one main boat day. Another night would have allowed a genuine rest day or a second water activity. Two nights in Dahab barely gave us time for the Blue Hole, a few meals and one morning routine before leaving Egypt.
If we returned, I would happily give Dahab a full week. It felt like the kind of place where the extra days would not need a packed itinerary.
Dahab or Hurghada: our final verdict
Dahab is where we would return. The food, waterfront and laid-back atmosphere gave it a personality that Hurghada did not have for us. We could imagine working for a few hours, walking to the gym, eating somewhere brilliant and still feeling like we were beside one of the world's most interesting diving areas.
Hurghada still belongs in the right Egypt itinerary. It made sense after Luxor, our boat day was one of the trip's biggest changes of pace and the water was beautiful. Choose it for an easy coastal holiday. Choose Dahab for a place you may not want to leave.
