Where to Stay in San Pedro de Atacama: Our Stay and Two Places I’d Compare
When we were choosing where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama, I cared much more about a comfortable bed, our own bathroom and a kitchen than a long list of hotel facilities. We were there for three nights before Bolivia, with an afternoon in Moon Valley and a very early start for El Tatio.
That meant the room had a fairly simple job: somewhere we could settle in, sleep well and feel a little bit at home between outings. Hostal Anpaymi Atacama did that for us.
If I were comparing places for the same trip again, I would start with these three. One is where we stayed; the other two give you a choice between another kitchen-friendly base and a more comfortable hotel in the centre.

For our style of trip, I would start with Anpaymi. Compare Atacama Ancestral if a shared kitchen and a quieter setting appeal, or Terrantai if you want central hotel comfort and a pool.

I would not choose purely on the word hostal or hotel. The bathroom, kitchen and location make a bigger difference to how a short stay feels than the label on the building.
Central San Pedro or a Quieter Walk Away?
For a first visit, I would compare the distance to the places you will actually use: tour collection, restaurants, groceries and any onward transport. A map pin on the edge of the town is not automatically a bad choice, but that walk matters more after a long outing or with luggage.
Terrantai is the central choice in this shortlist. Atacama Ancestral is the one to consider if you are happy walking roughly ten to fifteen minutes into the centre. That range reflects its listing and guest accounts, not a timed walk we personally did.
Our own decision favoured a simple room with useful facilities. Because we used organised excursions, we did not need parking or a place set up around a rental car. If you are driving, check parking explicitly rather than assuming every property has it.
Early collection changes what matters
We were getting ready for El Tatio at 4:24am. It is worth checking that you can leave easily at that hour, where the driver will meet you and whether breakfast can be arranged before an early departure. Breakfast included in the room rate is not much help if it begins after your tour leaves.
If you are continuing into Bolivia, also confirm checkout and luggage arrangements. We left San Pedro for a one-way crossing, so we took our bags with us rather than returning to the same room.
Hostal Anpaymi Atacama: Where We Stayed
Anpaymi suited us because we had a comfortable private room, our own bathroom and access to a shared kitchen. The room was compact, but it had what we needed for the three nights.
We stayed from 30 January to 2 February and paid A$308 for the room in total, or A$154 each for three nights. That is our historical booking cost, not a current nightly quote. For the room as a whole it worked out at about A$103 a night.

I really liked having the kitchen option. Dan and I travel full time, and cooking is something we actually enjoy. It is not always about finding the cheapest possible dinner; sometimes we just want an ordinary meal and a bit of home normality before another early alarm.
This is the stay I would look at first for a practical, tour-based visit. If you are picturing a pool afternoon or a hotel where the facilities are part of the holiday, compare Terrantai below instead.
Atacama Ancestral: The Other Kitchen-Friendly Pick
Hostal Atacama Ancestral is the one I would compare for a quieter base with a shared kitchen. The kitchen and manageable walk into town are what make it relevant to the way we travelled, rather than simply adding another bed to a list.

The important detail is the bathroom. The available room types include both private and shared bathrooms, even though parts of the general description focus on private facilities. I would select the exact room type rather than assuming every booking is the same.
The listing also states cash-only payment. Confirm the final amount, currency and any taxes with the property before arriving. A shared kitchen is useful, but I would not let that distract me from checking the payment and bathroom details.
Terrantai: For a More Comfortable Central Stay
Hotel Terrantai is where I would look for a little more comfort in the historic centre. It has a small outdoor pool, garden spaces and breakfast, so there is more to enjoy at the property between excursions.

When checked, its Booking score was 9.4 from 372 reviews and its location score was 9.8. I would compare it for the central position and hotel facilities, not because it is necessarily the lowest-price option.
Guest comments on the listing repeatedly mentioned the staff, breakfast and courtyard spaces. That makes it a different proposition from our simple kitchen-based stay. If the accommodation itself is part of your holiday, rather than mainly a base for tours, it is the one I would put beside Anpaymi in the comparison.
Check the age policy if travelling with children, as well as what your chosen rate includes. And ask about breakfast if you have an early El Tatio pickup. A lovely buffet and a pre-dawn departure do not always fit together!
What I Would Check Before Booking
Bathroom, kitchen and heating
For us, a private bathroom was worth prioritising. After San Pedro, our Bolivia tour had a shared room and a very basic bathroom on the first night, so having our own space beforehand felt especially good.
If cooking matters to you, check that guest kitchen access is actually included. If warmth matters, check the facilities of your room rather than relying on photographs of sunny courtyards. Our early excursions were cold even though the daytime images look like a warm desert holiday.
Location and the final price
Open the map, then check the route to your tour meeting point and the places you want to walk to. For payment, look at the total for the stay, cancellation conditions and any tax notes, not just the nightly number in search results.
The Wise card I use for travel is part of my usual travel setup, but it does not replace checking a property's cash-only policy. I would message the property if the payment wording is unclear.
Three nights or longer?
Our three nights gave us two full excursion days. If you want a longer activity list, add nights rather than treating arrival and departure days as completely free sightseeing time.
