Siwa Oasis Itinerary: How We Visited From Cairo & What We'd Do Differently
Siwa Oasis is worth the long journey from Cairo, but two nights is the absolute minimum. We travelled from Giza by private driver, spent one packed day at the Mountain of the Dead, Siwa salt lakes and Cleopatra's Spring, then left wishing we had one more full day.
If we planned the same trip again, we would stay three nights. That gives you two full days in Siwa between the long drives, enough time for the salt lakes and springs without sacrificing Shali Fortress, the Temple of the Oracle or a slower afternoon at the hotel.
Where should you stay in Siwa Oasis?
We stayed at Hotel Talid for two nights and would happily book it again. It felt calm after the long drive, breakfast was included, and the team arranged our guide for the Mountain of the Dead, salt lakes and Cleopatra's Spring. They also cooked a private Egyptian barbecue for us with four hours' notice, which became one of those simple travel evenings we still talk about.
Hotel Talid
Peaceful boutique-style rooms, a pool, breakfast and genuinely helpful staff who made our short stay easy.
Our two nights cost A$268.72 for the room, or A$134.36 per night for two people when we visited. Rates change by season, so use that only as a record of our trip rather than today's price.
The Wi-Fi was slow and mobile signal around Siwa could be patchy. Download your maps, booking confirmations and any contact details before leaving Cairo. Tuk-tuks were easy to arrange for restaurants and short trips around town.
Our Siwa Oasis itinerary from Cairo
Our trip fitted into three calendar days and two nights. It worked, but the first and last days were largely consumed by the road. This is exactly how we used the time.
Day 1: Drive from Giza to Siwa and settle in
We left Giza with a private driver and reached Siwa after roughly eight to nine hours, including stops. The changing landscape makes the journey interesting, but it is still a long travel day. We would not plan a major attraction for the same afternoon.
After checking into Hotel Talid, our priorities were cash, food and an early night. That was also when an ATM retained one of our Australian cards while we were trying to withdraw money to pay the driver. The bank beside it was closed, so we had to wait until the following day and continue with one fewer card.
Our lesson is simple: arrive with enough Egyptian pounds for the driver and first night, carry at least two cards separately, and use contactless withdrawal where the machine supports it. We use our Wise travel card overseas, but no single card should be your only way to access money in a remote town.
Our first-night plan: Check in, organise the next day's driver or guide, eat nearby and rest. Siwa rewards the journey, but trying to sightsee after nine hours in a car would have made the whole trip feel rushed.
Day 2: Mountain of the Dead, salt lakes and Cleopatra's Spring
Hotel Talid helped arrange our local guide, Youssaf, who collected us in the morning. We started at the Mountain of the Dead, an ancient hillside filled with rock-cut tombs and broad views over the palms and oasis.
From there we drove to the Siwa salt lakes. This was the reason we had accepted the long journey, and they still exceeded every photo we had seen. The water was an almost unreal turquoise and so saline that we floated without trying.
Do not shave immediately before visiting, and keep the water away from cuts, dry lips, eyes and mouth. We discovered very quickly that the salt finds every tiny scratch. Bring fresh water and a towel, then rinse as soon as possible.

Next came Cleopatra's Spring, a freshwater pool surrounded by palms and small cafés. Getting into fresh water after being completely covered in salt felt amazing. We stopped for lunch at TIT N GUBA beside the spring and tried a drink made with banana, dates and milk. The dates were grown locally and genuinely some of the best we have eaten.
That evening, the team at Hotel Talid cooked an Egyptian barbecue just for us. It was a full day, but the route made sense: history first, the salt lakes before the heat peaked, then fresh water and lunch at the spring.
Day 3: Breakfast and the drive back to Cairo
We had breakfast at the hotel, packed and began the long journey back. This is the part that made two nights feel too short. We technically visited Siwa, but only had one full day on the ground.
We would not remove anything from Day 2. Instead, we would add another night so the return drive did not immediately follow the busiest day of the trip.
What would we do differently in Siwa?
Our biggest change would be three nights instead of two. With an additional full day, we would plan this:
- Walk through Shali Fortress in the cooler morning.
- Visit the Temple of the Oracle, associated with Alexander the Great's visit to Siwa.
- Leave time for a long lunch and a quiet afternoon around the pool.
- Watch sunset near the oasis rather than treating every hour as a checklist.
We would also withdraw enough cash in Cairo, download everything offline and confirm our return driver before arriving. Those are small changes, but they remove most of the stress from such a remote stop.
Some itineraries add a desert safari or overnight camp. Regulations and local access can change. - Three nights: Our recommendation for the salt lakes, historical sites and time to breathe.
- Four or more nights: Best for a genuinely slow stay, especially if the hotel itself is part of the experience.

What should you pack for the Siwa salt lakes?
The salt lakes are easy to enjoy when you arrive prepared. Take:
- A swimsuit you do not mind covering in salt
- Fresh water for rinsing skin and eyes
- A towel and dry clothes
- Sandals or water shoes for the sharp salt edge
- Lip balm and sunscreen
- A waterproof phone pouch if you want photos in the water
- Cash for the guide, tuk-tuks, food and small purchases
- A backup bank card stored separately
Float on your back rather than trying to swim normally. Avoid splashing and do not put your face under the water. The buoyancy is the fun part, so there is no need to kick or work against it.
Is Siwa Oasis worth visiting?
Yes, completely. Siwa was one of the most unusual places in our entire Egypt trip. The salt lakes looked almost artificial, the oasis felt calm after Cairo, and Hotel Talid made a very short stay feel personal rather than transactional.
The trade-off is time. A return journey from Cairo uses roughly two days, so Siwa makes the most sense when you can protect at least two full days there. If your Egypt trip is only one week, Cairo and Luxor may be the better priority. If you have two weeks, Siwa is the contrast that makes the route memorable.
