Best Time to Visit Southern Sri Lanka: What April Was Actually Like
Every guide will tell you December to April for the south coast. We went right at the end of that window, and it rained.
Not all the time, and not enough to ruin anything. But we got thunderstorms big enough that we rearranged whole days around them, in what is supposed to be the driest month, and nobody had warned me. So this is what late March and April were genuinely like, from someone who was standing in it.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Southern Sri Lanka?
December to April, and we went in the last five weeks of it.
The south and west coasts are dry roughly December through April, and wet from May to September when the southwest monsoon arrives. The east and north run on the opposite schedule. That is why you cannot really answer "when should I visit Sri Lanka" without first deciding which half of the country you want.
Be honest with yourself about which coast you want. If you are going to the south, coming in July because the flights are cheap means arriving in the middle of the wet season.
Does It Rain in Sri Lanka in April?
Yes. It did for us, and it did properly.
Thunderstorms in Sri Lanka are no joke. They roll in fast, they are loud, and they can take out an afternoon! On the day we arrived at the safari camp at Yala it was raining hard enough that we stood around outside like kids waiting for our friends to make it down the driveway.
What I want to be clear about is that this is not a reason to change your dates. The storms come, they are heavy, and then they pass. Nothing about April felt like a wet-season trip. It felt like a dry-season trip with weather in it.
What it actually meant day to day: you keep one thing in your back pocket for a wet afternoon, and you stop assuming every sunset will happen.
When Is the Rainy Season in Sri Lanka?
This is the part that confuses people, and it is worth getting right, because Sri Lanka has two monsoons rather than one.

So the country is never entirely "in season" or "out of season". It just moves. When the south coast is wet, the east coast around Arugam Bay is having its best months, and the other way round.
We were on the south coast from late March to late April, which is the very end of that coast's dry run before the southwest monsoon starts in May.
What March and April Are Actually Like on the South Coast
Since this is the bit I can speak to directly, here is what a month there was like.
The sea was warm and calm enough to swim in every day. We swam constantly and never once found it cold or rough enough to skip!
The surf was good and forgiving. Weligama's bay was full of people learning every morning. Hiriketiya had waves for beginners on the inside and a point for people who knew what they were doing.
The sunsets were the best thing about the whole trip. They are the first thing I mention when anyone asks me about Sri Lanka!
It was busy but not overwhelming. Coconut Tree Hill at Mirissa was packed at sunset. We went back at sunrise the next morning and there were two other people there, which tells you the crowds are concentrated rather than constant.
The turtles were around. We saw hatchlings twice in a month, both by chance, and wild green turtles in the shallows at Talpe.
When to Visit for Yala National Park
We did our safari in mid April and saw elephants, a leopard, peacocks and a sloth bear across two game drives, which is about as good a run as you can hope for!
The general wisdom is that the drier months concentrate animals around the waterholes and make sightings easier, which fits with what we experienced. Our morning drive left before five and the afternoon drive went into a different block of the park.
Worth knowing: Yala's main block usually closes for part of September and October for the dry season. Check before you book if you are looking at that end of the year.
When Should You Avoid Southern Sri Lanka?
If the beaches are the reason you are going, I would not book the south coast between May and September. That is the southwest monsoon and you would be swimming against the odds.
That does not mean avoid Sri Lanka. It means go to the east coast instead in those months, which is exactly when it is at its best.
Is It Worth Going in Shoulder Season?
We effectively did, at the tail end of April, and I would do it again!
Warm water, good surf, plenty of sun, some big storms, and slightly fewer people than the peak of the season. If your dates are flexible and you can live with a wet afternoon here and there, the end of the dry season is a good trade.
What to Pack for the South Coast
Based on a month of it:
- A light rain jacket. You will use it once or twice and be very pleased
- Reef-safe sunscreen. The sun here is strong even under cloud
- Something for a wet afternoon. A book, a laptop, a plan
- A physical international driving licence, if you want to hire a scooter
- Cash, and more of it than you think. The ATMs frequently do not work

Hiriketiya. We ate breakfast here and it was one of the best meals of the trip. Get the tropical smoothie.

Weligama. A surf town first, and staying somewhere set up for it makes the mornings much easier.
