Where to Stay in Southern Sri Lanka: My 6 Favourite Bases for 2026
We slept in six different places on Sri Lanka's south coast in 28 nights, and I got the split badly wrong.
Fourteen of those nights were in the first town we landed in. Two were in the town I ended up loving most. So this is not a list of the places we stayed in order of how long we stayed. It is ranked by how much I would want to go back.
Where Should You Stay in Southern Sri Lanka? My Quick Answer
Weligama if it is your first trip, Hiriketiya if you want the best of the coast.
Weligama is central, has the best food and the gentlest surf, and puts Mirissa and Ahangama within easy reach. Hiriketiya is smaller, further along and better in almost every way that matters to me.

1. Hiriketiya: My Favourite Place in Sri Lanka
I went in assuming Weligama would win and it was not close!
Hiriketiya is a horseshoe bay with jungle behind it. There is surf for every level, the food is the best on the coast, there is actual nightlife, and the whole place has a feel that none of the bigger towns matched. I could spend months in this area alone!
We only had two nights here and it is the single biggest thing I would change about our trip.
Salt House
We ate breakfast here and it was one of the best meals we had in Sri Lanka, so I can vouch for at least half the experience. Get the tropical smoothie! It sits right in the middle of everything Hiriketiya is good at, which in a bay this small means you can walk to all of it.
Blue Heaven Hiriketiya
The second option we would look at in the bay. Hiriketiya is small enough that location barely separates anywhere, so this comes down to what is free and what suits your budget on the dates you want.
We paid A$92 per person per night for two nights here, in a two bedroom apartment just outside the bay.
2. Weligama: The Best Base for a First Trip
If you are coming to this coast once and want one base, make it this one. I rated it 9/10.
It is central. Mirissa and Ahangama are both a short ride away, the bay is a huge protected horseshoe that is about as forgiving as surf gets, and the food is the best spread anywhere on the coast. If you are working while you travel, this is where the cafes and the wifi are.
One honest thing: the main beach itself is not the prettiest on this coast, in our opinion. You base here for the position and the food, not the sand.
Silvas Surf Home
Weligama is a surf town first, and staying somewhere set up for it makes the mornings much easier. Being able to walk down with a board rather than organising transport every day is the difference between surfing three times and surfing every day.
Komorebi Weligama
The other Weligama option we would book. Weligama town can be busy and noisy in a way that Hiriketiya is not, so somewhere with a bit of separation from the main road is worth paying for here more than it is further down the coast.
We stayed eight nights in Weligama for A$30.50 per person per night, which was the cheapest sustained stay of the whole trip and one of my favourites!
3. Yala: Two Nights, and Make Them Count
You are not staying in Yala for the town. You are staying for what happens at five in the morning.
Book a camp rather than a hotel, because two nights at a camp usually includes two game drives, and the second one is where we saw the sloth bear.
Big Game Yala by Eco Team
Tented rooms on the edge of the park with a real bed, a good fan and a private bathroom. Two game drives came with our two nights, in different blocks and different vehicles, and every meal was included, eaten together at night with thunder going off outside. The road in is rough. I would call that part of it.
A$900 for two of us, two nights, both drives and all meals. That is A$225 each per night and it is 29% of our entire accommodation spend for the month. I rated it 10/10 and I would pay it again!
4. Hikkaduwa: Where Most People Start
We gave Hikkaduwa fourteen nights and I rated it 8/10, which is the biggest gap between time spent and enthusiasm in this whole article.
It is not a criticism of the place. The sunsets here were the best we saw anywhere in Sri Lanka, we watched baby turtles hatch on the beach, and the cafes sit right on the sand. It is very quiet and there is not much nightlife, which is perfect if that is what you want.
Amaroo Hikkaduwa
This was our favourite cafe in Sri Lanka before I realised you could sleep here. We came six separate times over two weeks, the staff got to know us, and they brought out a birthday cake for Daniel that we had never mentioned. It is right on the beach, the avo toast is the best I have had anywhere by miles, and it is set up for people who want to work with a view of the water.
Tropical House Jungleside Villa
Hikkaduwa is a long strip and being set back from it is not a bad thing, particularly if you have a scooter. Worth comparing on price against anything beachfront, because the beach is a two minute ride away rather than a decision.
The price range here is the story. We stayed in two different places in Hikkaduwa back to back and paid A$28.88 and then A$59.78 per person per night. Same town, same beach, one week apart! Full numbers in our Sri Lanka cost breakdown.
5. Mirissa: Worth a Night for the Sunrise
We day-tripped to Mirissa rather than staying, and I would do it differently now.
Coconut Tree Hill is here, and the only way to see it without a crowd is to be standing on it before six in the morning. That is a lot easier if you have slept ten minutes away rather than riding over in the dark.
The Secret Guesthouse
Mirissa is busier than the towns either side of it, so somewhere tucked away is worth having. Being able to walk up to Coconut Tree Hill for sunrise is the reason to sleep here at all.
BeachMirissa Hotel
The option to compare if you would rather be on the beach itself than back from it. Mirissa beach is one of the nicer stretches on this coast, so paying for proximity here makes more sense than it does in Weligama.
6. Ahangama: The Quiet One
Ahangama sits between Weligama and Galle and it is where we ended up when we walked out of a restaurant elsewhere. Rooftops, good food, fewer people.
Mayava Villa
Ahangama is spread out and quiet, which is the appeal, so a villa suits it better than a room on a main road. Good for a couple or a small group who want somewhere to come back to rather than a base to head out from.
Luma Ahangama Villa
The second one we would compare here. Between the two it comes down to size and what is available, because both put you in the same quiet stretch of coast.
If You Are Travelling as a Group: The Villa We Finished At
Our last two nights were at M Beach House on Mawella Bay, with friends, and it made leaving Sri Lanka considerably harder!
It sleeps eight, there is a long lap pool, and there is a private chef who will cook you anything you want for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He made us traditional Sri Lankan food, and then brownies, and then fried pineapple with ice cream! It is ten minutes from Hiriketiya and from beaches on either side.
M Beach House, Mawella Bay
Four bedrooms, sleeps eight, on one of the calmest swimmable bays on the south coast. The staff were the kindest we met anywhere, and having someone cook three meals a day out of the garden is a very hard thing to come home from. Only worth it as a group, which is exactly what it is designed for.

Move less than you think. The coast is longer than it looks and the driving is slow, so three or four bases in two weeks is plenty.
Final Thoughts: Where to Stay in Southern Sri Lanka
Base yourself in Weligama if it is your first time and you want everything within reach. Go to Hiriketiya if you want the place I have not stopped talking about since.
The one thing I would say above all of it: give the far south more nights than feels sensible. We put fourteen into the first town we landed in and two into the best one, and that is the only thing about this trip I would properly change.
