Mnemba Island Tour, Zanzibar: Our Snorkelling Day & What I'd Check Before Booking
I really wanted to see dolphins in Zanzibar, but I was also nervous about the way some of these trips might work. Before booking, I was very specific with our guide: I did not want to join a packed group of boats chasing animals around.
What followed was one of the moments I was most excited to tell you about from this trip. Dolphins moved through the water beside us, we snorkelled, and even with a cloudy sky the sea around Mnemba was this ridiculous shade of blue!
I loved the day. I also think the details matter much more than the words “dolphin tour” on a booking page. This is our Mnemba Island boat-trip experience from July, what our spending record shows and the questions I would ask before choosing an operator.
Is a Mnemba Island tour worth it? My quick answer
Yes, I loved our morning around Mnemba, but I would book it for the snorkelling and time on the water, with wildlife encounters as a possibility rather than a promise. The way the operator behaves matters more to me than getting the longest list of stops for the lowest price.
One important detail: we went around Mnemba, not onto the island. Our day involved a road transfer, a small boat, snorkelling, a dolphin encounter and fruit afterwards. It was not a beach-club day on a private island.

Where should you stay for a Mnemba boat trip?
We did this during our Nungwi stay, with Siri Beach Lodge as our base. The room was spacious, the beach was a short walk away and we could head out for meals without turning everything into another taxi ride.
For a trip with an early pickup, I would rather already be staying in the north than add a long transfer from Paje. Confirm the actual departure beach with your operator: “pickup from Nungwi” does not necessarily mean your boat leaves from Nungwi beach.
Siri Beach Lodge
A spacious room and a short walk to Nungwi beach. This is the base we used for exploring the town and heading out for meals.
The Z Hotel
The Nungwi waterfront setting is why I would compare this one. Check the room category and total for your dates alongside Siri.
The Z Hotel is the waterfront option I would compare if you want more of your stay centred on that setting. We spent an evening there with friends, and I loved being by the water. The Booking listing combines Z Hotel and the newer Z2 behind it, so check which building and room you are choosing. Compare the current total with Siri rather than assuming every room has the view in the lead photograph.

How we booked, and what the trip cost
We arranged the outing through Instagram with @letsgotozanzibar, and our guide was Edy, @flytozanzibar. Both are credited in our Zanzibar Part 2 video description. I thought Edy was lovely and really detailed when explaining things during the day.
Daniel's travel-spending record has A$108.66 per person allocated to this outing in July 2026. That is our recorded amount, not a quote for a current package. Your pickup location, whether the boat is shared and the inclusions can all change the comparison.
I would get these points confirmed in writing before paying:
- The pickup point and time, departure beach and expected return window.
- Whether the boat is private or shared, and how many guests will be aboard.
- Whether all marine or conservation fees are included in the final total.
- What snorkelling equipment and life jackets are available.
- Whether water, fruit or lunch is included. Those are not interchangeable.
- What happens if sea conditions are unsuitable, or if you choose not to enter the water.
- Whether you can skip a dolphin stop and still enjoy the snorkelling outing.
The point is not to turn your holiday into an interrogation. It is to make sure the day you picture is the day being offered! I would be especially cautious with any promise of guaranteed wild dolphins.

What happened on our Mnemba tour?
An early start and a fruit stop
Our pickup was around 6am. We stopped for fresh fruit on the way, including red bananas, which I had never seen before. It was one of those little details that barely makes the itinerary but sticks in your memory afterwards.
The drive to the boat took about 45 minutes, with snorkelling gear collected along the way. That was our route and timing, not a fixed schedule for every tour. I would leave the rest of the morning free rather than book something immediately after a promised return time.
The colour of the water
I could not get over the different bands of blue. Light blue, medium blue and dark blue, almost in lines beside each other. It was cloudy, with rain nearby, and the water still looked like that!
That is one reason I would not judge the trip purely by whether the sky in your forecast looks like a postcard. Sea conditions are the important decision for the operator; our photos show that an overcast day can still be beautiful. They do not prove another cloudy day will be suitable for going out.
Snorkelling, then the sandbank surprise
We saw lots of different fish while snorkelling, along with starfish below us. I loved having time to look down into a completely different little world after so many days on the beach.
Our sandbank stop was not a dry patch of sand with a picnic laid out. The tide was coming in and it was under roughly half a metre of water. Still lovely, but a very different picture from the dry-sandbank photos you might see when browsing trips.
Ask about the tide if a sandbank stop is important to you. A stop being listed does not mean it will be exposed at the time you arrive.
The dolphin encounter, and what I would do carefully
The dolphin encounter was the emotional highlight for me. I saw two from the boat, got into the water, and then there were four. Daniel joined me, and I remember several moving together down towards the sand. I came out absolutely buzzing!
We got in and out three times and then chose to leave. I was glad we had spoken about avoiding the busiest groups before the trip, rather than trying to have that conversation in the middle of it.
But I want to separate my excitement from a much bigger claim: a lovely encounter does not prove that a tour is harmless to wildlife. An early start or a smaller group is not a certification, and I would not describe an operator as “ethical” simply because we enjoyed the morning.
On camera I described reaching my hand out during the encounter. That is not something I would tell you to copy. Do not try to touch, feed or follow dolphins. Give them space and be willing to stay on the boat or leave the area.
Before booking, I would ask what the guide does if several boats gather or animals move away. “We will find somewhere quieter” is less useful than a clear willingness to abandon that part of the outing. I would rather miss an encounter than feel that getting my photo had become the whole reason for being there.
If your main interest is snorkelling, say that plainly. You do not have to choose a trip built around entering the water with dolphins. Compare the options and ask for an outing that suits what you are actually comfortable with.
What I loved, and what I would not promise
What I loved
The water, the fish, the fruit afterwards and the excitement of seeing wildlife made this one of my favourite Zanzibar mornings. I also appreciated having a guide I could talk to about the part I was worried about. It felt much better than silently hoping we wanted the same kind of trip.
I wish I had an underwater camera to show you what I saw! We did not have one, so the vlog has our boat footage and my very excited recap rather than an underwater film of the encounter.
What I would not promise
I would not promise dolphins, perfect visibility, calm seas or a dry sandbank. Those are not things a booking confirmation controls. If the only acceptable outcome is swimming beside dolphins, I would change that expectation before paying for anything.
I also felt stings in the water afterwards, which I described in the vlog as jellyfish or little stingers. I could not identify exactly what caused them. Ask the crew about conditions and let them know if something happens, rather than brushing it off because the photos look lovely.
This is an open-water outing. Tell the operator your swimming ability and ask about support, suitable life jackets and whether staying aboard is an option. Choose around your comfort in the water, not anyone else's holiday photos.
How I would fit Mnemba into a Zanzibar holiday
I would put Mnemba during the northern part of the trip and leave the afternoon unstructured. We had four nights in Nungwi, which gave us time for the boat day as well as eating out and enjoying the coast.
The evening atmosphere was a lovely contrast to an early departure. Maisha was one of our sunset spots, and being able to head back out for food without another major journey was exactly what I liked about our base.

Bring swimwear, a towel, dry clothes, drinking water if it is not supplied, sun protection and a dry bag for anything you cannot afford to get wet. Check the equipment before leaving shore and do not assume a small boat has a toilet or changing area. These are simple questions worth asking before the day starts.

Can you go onto Mnemba Island on a day tour?
Our tour stayed offshore around Mnemba; we did not land on the island. Do not assume a boat excursion includes access to the private island. Ask exactly where the trip goes before booking.
Are dolphins guaranteed on a Mnemba tour?
No. They are wild animals, and I would not book on the basis of a guaranteed encounter. Choose the snorkelling and boat outing for its own sake, and be prepared to skip a dolphin stop.

Final thoughts: would I do a Mnemba boat trip again?
Yes, but I would have the same conversation with the guide before booking, and I would be happy to make snorkelling the main event. I loved what we experienced. I just would not turn that into a promise that every trip works the same way.
