Nungwi, Zanzibar: Things to Do, Where to Stay & Our Four-Night Guide
Sunset, a plate of fish and absolutely no hurry to go anywhere. That is the bit of Nungwi I keep coming back to. We had four nights at the northern tip of Zanzibar, and after spending time on the east coast, being closer to the water throughout the day felt like a completely different beach trip!
But it was not just the beach. There was coconut coffee at a little Vietnamese restaurant, football on the sand, and a kitten Daniel rescued from a roof who then followed him to the toilet. Very difficult to leave a place when that is happening.
This is how I would plan a few nights in Nungwi: where we stayed, the places we ate, what we did around Mnemba, and why I would leave some of the schedule empty. We visited in July 2026 as part of 17 nights in Zanzibar.
Is Nungwi Worth Visiting? My Quick Answer
Yes, especially if you want beach time and sunsets without planning your entire day around the east coast's enormous tidal changes. Four nights gave us space for a boat trip as well as afternoons doing very little. I would happily give it three or four nights again.
Nungwi still has tides, changing sea conditions and busy stretches of beach. It is not a promise of safe swimming at every hour. What felt different to Paje was that the water did not disappear into the distance in the same way.
Choose it for a beach-focused few days, not because you want a secluded resort bubble. There are restaurants, sellers, boats and people playing on the sand. I liked having life around us. If you are still choosing your coast, start with our Paje or Nungwi accommodation comparison.
Where to Stay in Nungwi
My priority here would be walking distance to the beach and somewhere to eat, rather than choosing purely by a pool photo. We were coming for the town as well as the water, and being able to wander out without arranging a taxi made our days easy.
Siri Beach Lodge: Our Four-Night Base
We stayed at Siri Beach Lodge, about a minute's walk from the beach. Our room was big, the air conditioning worked well and we had mosquito netting over the bed. It was an easy base for the way we actually travel: go out, eat locally, get back comfortably, repeat.
We paid A$444 for four nights for the two of us, which worked out at A$111 a night. That is our July stay, not a rate I can promise for your dates. Compare the final total, room type and cancellation terms when you book.
Siri Beach Lodge
A spacious room and a short walk to Nungwi beach. This is the base we used for exploring the town and heading out for meals.
The Z Hotel: The Beachfront Option I Would Compare
If you want the beachfront setting to be a bigger part of the stay, I would compare The Z Hotel. It puts you on the Nungwi waterfront rather than a short walk back from it. For me, the decision would come down to whether that setting is worth the difference in your actual dates' prices.

Things to Do in Nungwi Without Filling Every Hour
Leave Time for the Beach
This sounds obvious, but I would not travel all the way up here and then book a different excursion every morning. The beach was the reason to be in Nungwi. Some of my favourite moments were just watching what was going on: football, acrobats flipping on the sand and people heading out along the waterfront.
Take your first afternoon slowly. Walk the stretch near your accommodation, find somewhere you like for a drink, and get a feel for the water before jumping in. Look out for boats and follow local advice about the conditions. Easier swimming than our experience of Paje does not mean every patch is suitable at every tide.
Stay Out for Sunset
Nungwi's evenings were a highlight for me! We watched the sun go down from the waterfront, including Bobo beach bar and Maisha. You do not need to turn every sunset into an expensive dinner booking. A drink, a walk and a place to sit are a lovely way to spend that part of the day.
If a restaurant view matters to you, arrive with time to choose a table rather than appearing after the sky has already changed. I would make one evening a longer seafood dinner, then keep the others flexible.
Wander Beyond the Waterfront Respectfully
There is much more to Nungwi than its hotel frontage. Walking a few streets back showed us everyday life away from the beach restaurants, and people we met were welcoming. We also spent time talking with a Maasai seller on the beach rather than making every conversation about buying something.
These are people's homes and workplaces, not a backdrop. Ask before taking someone's photo, avoid pointing a camera into private spaces, and accept a no. A relaxed walk and a conversation can be meaningful without needing to turn either into an organised activity.
Keep an Evening Free for the Atmosphere
We saw a full moon party setup during our visit, and the beach had plenty going on. That does not mean the same event will be on when you arrive. Ask locally about that week's plans rather than building a whole trip around a party schedule from somebody else's visit.
If you are a light sleeper, check recent reviews for noise around the specific room you are booking. Being near the atmosphere is lovely until you want an early night before a boat pickup.
Our Mnemba Boat Trip From Nungwi
We booked our Mnemba outing through Instagram with @letsgotozanzibar, with @flytozanzibar guiding us. The pickup was around 6am, followed by roughly 45 minutes in the car before getting on the boat. We paid A$108.66 for the two of us.
There was snorkelling, fruit on the boat and a sandbank stop, although the sandbank was partly underwater when we went. That is another reason not to treat a perfect white-sand photo as a guaranteed part of your itinerary. The sea decides quite a lot of the day.
Swimming alongside dolphins was one of those moments I could hardly believe was happening. It felt like magic! Edy was amazing too, talking us through the day in so much detail. That experience really stayed with me.
Before booking a wildlife trip, ask how the operator behaves around the animals. I would avoid boats that chase, touch or feed them, and go knowing that an encounter is never guaranteed.
I was stung by a jellyfish too, so our day was not entirely the effortless version you might imagine from a few photos! Tell your guide if anything happens in the water and follow their safety instructions. This is open water, not a swimming pool.

Where We Ate in Nungwi
Hanoi House: Coconut Coffee and a Very Friendly Kitten
Hanoi House was such a good find. The owner was from Da Nang, and the coconut coffee brought us straight back to Vietnam. We had sizzling beef and a cold chicken noodle salad, and it was a lovely change of pace from eating on the waterfront.
Daniel rescued a kitten from the roof, which became the main event of that visit. She followed him around afterwards, including to the toilet. Honestly, how are you supposed to leave after that?
This would be on my list for a coffee or lunch rather than just defaulting to whichever restaurant is attached to the accommodation. Finding places like this is a big part of why we like staying within a town.
Maisha: Seafood With the Sunset
At Maisha Beach Seafood and Cocktails, we had kingfish, fish curry and fried rice. The food and that evening light together were a very good combination. This is the dinner I would make space for if you only have a few nights.
I would go for the sunset setting as much as the meal. Do not rush through it to tick off another stop afterwards. We travel full time, and evenings like this are a reminder that we do not have to be in sightseeing mode constantly.
How I Would Plan Four Nights in Nungwi
For a return visit, I would spread four nights out like this. Keep the boat day movable around weather and availability.

Four nights gives you three full days between arrival and departure. If you only have two nights, I would choose between the boat outing and more beach time rather than trying to squeeze everything in.
We split our Zanzibar stay between the north and Paje. If you are doing the same, allow roughly two hours for the transfer between those areas, with extra time for traffic or stops. Money, Bookings and Small Practical Things
We used cash during the trip and saw prices quoted in both Tanzanian shillings and US dollars. Confirm the currency and total before agreeing to a ride or ordering. Some local beers we bought were around US$5, but that is an example from our visit rather than a universal menu price.
I use this Wise card for travel, alongside having local cash available. Check the ATM's own fee before withdrawing; I would not promise that any card makes every cash withdrawal free.

FAQs About Visiting Nungwi
How many nights do you need in Nungwi?
I would give Nungwi three or four nights for a beach-focused stay. We had four, which left room for a Mnemba outing without giving up all our slower beach time. Two nights is possible, but I would do less rather than rush.
Is Nungwi better than Paje for swimming?
For our trip, Nungwi was easier for spontaneous swims because the water stayed closer than on Paje's very tidal beach. Nungwi still has tides, boats and changing conditions, so check the particular stretch before swimming.
Can you visit Mnemba from Nungwi?
Yes. Our trip included a pickup from Nungwi and a drive to the boat departure point. Check whether your booking includes that transfer. A snorkelling trip around Mnemba does not mean you can land on the private island.

Final Thoughts: Would I Stay in Nungwi Again?
Yes, for a few nights of swimming, sunset dinners and not doing too much. I would still keep Paje in a longer Zanzibar trip because I loved our routine there, but I am glad we did not leave the north out.
Start with Siri Beach Lodge's availability if you want a base like ours, leave a few afternoons unplanned, and make time for that coconut coffee. That would be a very happy few days for me.
