Is Seychelles Worth Visiting? Our Honest Answer After 12 Days Across 3 Islands
Before we arrived, I had built Seychelles up so much in my head that I was almost nervous it could not possibly live up to it. The photos looked unreal, the accommodation prices looked very real, and I kept wondering whether it would feel like a destination made only for luxury resorts and honeymoons.
Twelve days later, after travelling across Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, my answer was completely clear. Seychelles is one of the most incredible groups of islands we have ever visited. The beaches genuinely looked like the photographs, the people were so kind and the islands felt completely different from one another.
I also would not tell everybody to book it without thinking. It is expensive in a few important places, the ferry can be rough, August is windy and a rushed trip would miss the reason we loved it. This is my honest answer about whether Seychelles is worth visiting, including who I think will love it and who may prefer somewhere easier.
Is Seychelles Worth Visiting? My Quick Answer
Yes, Seychelles is worth visiting if you love beaches, independent island travel and a trip that mixes slow days with a few unforgettable experiences. It is not only for honeymoons and it is not necessary to stay in a luxury resort.
Our final verdict on camera was: beaches like we had never seen before, the kindest people and beautiful food. Seychelles was my fiftieth country, so that is not something I say lightly!
The trip cost us A$3,994.33 in Seychelles for two people over twelve days, excluding international flights. Accommodation and ferries were the expensive part. Cooking in apartments, using local takeaways, hiring small cars and spending plenty of time at free beaches stopped the rest of the trip becoming ridiculous.

Where We Stayed Across Seychelles
We stayed in self-catering apartments on all three islands. That gave us kitchens, space to work and a little home normality while travelling full time. It also made Seychelles much more affordable than eating at resorts every night.
Peponi SelfCatering Apartments
Our final Mahé base, with a kitchen and easy access to Beau Vallon for swimming, sunset and dinner. Beau Vallon is the area I would compare first for an easy initial stay.
Chez Rona
Our host thought of everything and cooked us a complimentary Creole dinner. The apartment was at Anse Possession, so we hired a car to reach beaches and our day-trip pickup.
MAZU Apartments
Our largest Seychelles apartment, with a pool and bikes available for SCR100 a day. We booked only two days out, which is why our price was much higher than I would normally accept.
Why Seychelles Was Worth It for Us
The biggest reason is that Seychelles did not feel like one beach destination repeated across three islands. Mahé gave us rainforest, local food, long drives and everyday life. Praslin gave us our favourite swimming beach and the Curieuse tortoise day. La Digue gave us bicycles, granite boulders and the slow island feeling I had imagined before arriving.
That variety is what justified the ferry effort and the cost. If we had stayed in one resort on Mahé for twelve days, I do not think my answer would be nearly as enthusiastic.
The Beaches Really Are That Good
I know every tropical destination claims beautiful beaches. Seychelles is the rare place where the famous images did not feel edited beyond recognition when we arrived.
Anse Lazio on Praslin was our best beach for swimming. Beau Vallon on Mahé was the easiest combination of calm water, sunset and places to eat. Anse Source d'Argent on La Digue had the huge granite formations everybody comes to photograph, while Petite Anse on Mahé gave us a luxury-looking day that cost absolutely nothing.
The honest part is that they are not all calm at the same time. We visited in August during the southeast trade winds. Beau Vallon and Anse Lazio worked beautifully, while Anse Intendance was powerful and locals were warning people not to swim at Grand Anse on La Digue.

Visiting Three Islands Made the Trip
Mahé, Praslin and La Digue each deserve time. Mahé is the practical island with the international airport, the widest food choice, hikes, rum tasting and the easiest road network. Praslin is smaller and quieter, with Anse Lazio and easy access to Curieuse. La Digue is the one where more bikes than cars changes the entire rhythm.
We stayed twelve days, but I recommend an eight-day first trip with two days on Mahé, two on Praslin, two on La Digue and the final two back on Mahé. That puts you near the international airport at the end, so a ferry delay is less likely to become an airport problem.

Curieuse Was Worth Paying For
Most of our favourite Seychelles days were free beach days, but Curieuse was the paid experience I would book again first. We met free-roaming giant tortoises, walked across the island, learned about the Doctor's House from 1873, saw coco de mer growing naturally, ate a Creole barbecue and snorkelled around St Pierre.
We paid A$111 each for the tour plus SCR150 each for the protected-area fee. It included pickup and drop-off from our Praslin accommodation and lunch.

The People and Food Surprised Us
I expected seafood and resort prices. I did not expect our Praslin host to cook us a complimentary Creole dinner with chicken curry, green papaya and job fish, or a little Mahé shop owner to cut open a soursop so we could try it.
We ate at both ends of the budget. Village Take Away on Praslin cost A$13.27, while Les Rochers was A$86.88 and became our most expensive meal of the trip. Beach Shak at Beau Vallon was our best-value sit-down meal on Mahé, and we went back to Ô Saveurs des Iles for ice cream twice.
The kindness mattered more than the individual meals. People shared stories, recommendations and little bits of island life that made Seychelles feel lived in rather than like one large holiday resort.
Seychelles Is Not Only for Luxury Travellers
We did not stay at the Four Seasons. We walked through it to reach Petite Anse because the beach is public, brought our own food and spent the day there for free. We cooked breakfast at home and the entire beach day cost us zero dollars.
That sums up our trip. We stayed in apartments with kitchens, bought groceries, used local takeaway shops and chose where to spend more deliberately. Cooking was not only a budget strategy either. After travelling full time for eighteen months, using a kitchen and eating something familiar gives us the home normality we genuinely miss.

What I Did Not Love About Seychelles
The trip was not perfect, and I think this is the part most "reasons to visit" articles skip.
The Mahé to Praslin Ferry Was Rough
Our crossing took about an hour and fifteen minutes and people around us were dropping like flies with seasickness. Daniel and I were okay, but the boat was hectic. Praslin to La Digue was only around fifteen minutes and felt completely different.
If you become seasick, take your usual medication before boarding. Do not wait until the ferry is moving.
Accommodation Can Become Ridiculously Expensive
We booked La Digue only two days before arriving and paid A$701.11 for two nights. That is about A$351 a night for an apartment, not a boujee resort. We had almost no options left, so this is not the price I would use to judge the island in general.
Book La Digue first. Its accommodation supply is much smaller than Mahé's, and leaving it late removed our ability to compare value.
August Is Windier Than the Photos Suggest
We were lucky and swam on most days, but Praslin had a rainy, windy morning and the exposed beaches could be rough. If I were flying a very long way specifically for calm tropical water, I would aim for one of the changeover periods rather than the peak southeast trade winds.
Is Seychelles Worth the Cost?
For us, yes, but the answer depends on how you spend. Our in-country total was A$3,994.33 for two people over twelve days, or about A$166 per person per day. Accommodation cost A$2,256.57 and ferries cost A$472.18, so those two categories represented most of the pain.
Restaurants cost A$467.20 across the trip, groceries A$87.41 and coffee only A$19.61. Apartments with kitchens made a huge difference, and many of the best beaches and viewpoints cost little or nothing.
We used the Wise card I use for travel for card spending and currency conversion, while also taking out cash for smaller purchases and places where it was easier.
Seychelles is not the cheapest island destination. I still think it delivers enough that the cost made sense, especially because we visited all three islands rather than paying resort prices to see one beach.
Is Seychelles Worth Visiting for a Honeymoon?
Absolutely, without fail, one thousand percent. That was my answer when people messaged us about honeymoons during the trip and it is still my answer now.
The scenery is romantic without requiring every day to revolve around a resort. You can combine a beautiful apartment, a few restaurant nights, a private-feeling beach, cycling on La Digue and one memorable boat day.
I would give La Digue three nights rather than the two we had. The famous beach is much calmer early in the morning, the island becomes slower after day visitors leave and cycling to dinner feels completely different from getting another taxi.
Who May Not Love Seychelles
Seychelles may not be the right first choice if you want an extremely cheap beach holiday, hate moving accommodation or need nightlife every night. It also takes more organisation than flying into one resort and staying there.
You will probably love it if you value beaches, nature, small local interactions and having the freedom to build your own days. It suits couples beautifully, but I would happily return without treating it as a honeymoon destination.
The biggest mistake would be spending so much getting there that you only allow three or four rushed days. If that is the choice, I would either stay only on Mahé or wait until you can give the islands more time.

Seychelles is worth visiting, and it was even better than the version I had built up in my head. The beaches looked unreal, the islands had their own personalities and the small personal moments stopped the trip feeling like a luxury brochure.
It is not perfect. The ferry can be rough, accommodation disappears quickly and the wrong coast in August can look very different from the postcard. Plan those parts well, then leave space for slow beach days, a kitchen breakfast and the kind of conversation you never find in a generic list.
My rating is a very easy 10 out of 10. I would go back, give La Digue longer and still book Curieuse first.
