How Many Days in Istanbul? We Did Four and Would Do Three
Istanbul was the last stop of our eighteen nights in Türkiye, and it is the only place on that trip I would give fewer nights to.
That is not the answer most articles give you, and it is not because Istanbul is not worth going. It is because four nights was one more than we had things we wanted to do, and by the last day we were tired of the crowds rather than sad to leave.
How Many Days Do You Need in Istanbul? My Quick Answer
Three nights. Enough for the mosques, the food, one proper shopping day and a slower morning, without the day where you run out of things you actually want to do.
Four if you are adding something specific: a Bosphorus day, a health check, or serious shopping.
Why We Would Cut a Night
Istanbul was our lowest-rated stop in Türkiye and the reasons are specific rather than vague.
The food culture is genuinely amazing and you should come hungry. But it is a little too touristy in the parts you are most likely to spend time in, prices have clearly moved with inflation, and the Grand Bazaar was so overwhelming that we lasted about thirty minutes before we left.
None of that makes it skippable. It makes it a three night city rather than a four night one.
What Three Nights in Istanbul Should Look Like
This is our four nights with the surplus day taken out.
Day one: the historic side
The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the streets between them. Dress for mosques, which in summer means something with sleeves that is still light enough to walk in.
Do the Grand Bazaar on this day, and do it knowing you may want to leave quickly. It is worth seeing. It is not worth a whole afternoon.
Day two: Galata, and the shopping that actually surprised us
Cross to the Galata side. The tower, the streets around it, and then the thing I did not expect to be the highlight of Istanbul for me.
The vintage shopping on Serdar-ı Ekrem Caddesi in Galata is the best I have seen anywhere. Walk all the way down the street. It is wall-to-wall sunglasses, cases of vintage watches, rugs and clothes, and I genuinely could not get over it. Leave space in your suitcase.
Day three: eat, and go somewhere with a view
The food is the best argument for Istanbul, so leave a day that is mostly about it. The Basque cheesecake alone is worth planning around. We paid about A$12 for a slice and I have thought about it since.
A rooftop with a view over the mosques is the right way to end it.
When Four Nights Makes Sense
Three specific cases, and they are all things we did or wish we had.
A full body health check. We did one at Memorial Hospital, and it takes an entire day. Dan paid US$1,200 for his. Mine was a collaboration, so we did not pay for it. It is genuinely worth it and it is genuinely a whole day, so it needs its own night.
A Bosphorus day. We did not do a proper Bosphorus cruise and it is the thing I would add if we went back.
Serious shopping. If you are going to Serdar-ı Ekrem to actually buy rather than to look, one afternoon is not enough.
Where to Stay, and What It Cost
We stayed in an Airbnb that let us walk almost everywhere, and it was A$88 a night for the two of us, which tied with Antalya as the cheapest room of our whole trip. That genuinely surprised me, because Istanbul felt like the expensive one while we were in it.
The expense in Istanbul is not the bed. It is everything else.
The Istanbul hotel we would compare. We stayed in an Airbnb at A$88 a night for the two of us, and if you would rather book a hotel this is the one, because Pera puts you on the Galata side where the shopping is.
The Westist Hotel & Spa
Istanbul. Pera, on the Galata side, which puts you next to the vintage shopping and walking distance from most of what you came for.
Our Istanbul Airbnb and every other base we slept in is on our Türkiye stays page.
Is Istanbul Worth Visiting at All?
Yes, and I want to be clear about that, because a 7 out of 10 from us is not a low score in absolute terms. It is the lowest of seven stops on a trip where the other six were extraordinary.
Istanbul has the best food culture in Türkiye, shopping I still think about, and history you cannot see anywhere else. It is also busier, hotter and more expensive than the coast, and it is the one place where we felt like tourists rather than travellers.
Three nights gets you all of the good and less of that. Which is why we would do three.
The full route, and where Istanbul sits in it, is in our 18-night Türkiye itinerary.
Still planning? Here is the street worth a whole afternoon and the day that earns a fourth night.
FAQs About How Long to Spend in Istanbul
Is 3 days enough for Istanbul?
Yes, for a first visit. Three nights gives you two full days, which covers the historic side, Galata and the shopping, plus time to eat properly.
Is 2 days enough for Istanbul?
It is tight but workable if Istanbul is a stopover rather than the trip. You would do the mosques and the Grand Bazaar and skip the Galata side, which is the part I would least want to lose.
Is 5 days too long in Istanbul?
For most people, yes, unless you are adding day trips out of the city or something specific like a health check. We found four one night too many.
What is the best area to stay in Istanbul?
Somewhere you can walk from. Ours was walkable to almost everything and cost A$88 a night for two in late June. Pera and Galata put you closest to the shopping.
Is Istanbul expensive?
Not for accommodation, which surprised us. For everything else, it is the most expensive place we went in Türkiye after Bodrum, and the inflation is noticeable.
