El Tatio Geysers Tour: What Our Early Morning Was Really Like

Wetlands and snow-dusted mountains on our El Tatio excursion

At 4:24am we were getting ready to leave our room in San Pedro de Atacama. Later, with the temperature around freezing, I realised I had not dressed warmly enough!

The El Tatio outing was the early start of our Atacama stay. It was also more than a quick look at the geysers: our morning included breakfast, mountain scenery, flamingos and a village stop on the way back.

I am glad we went. I just wish I had packed for the altitude and the hour rather than the idea of a sunny desert. Here is what our excursion was like and what I would check before booking it now.

Is an El Tatio Geysers Tour Worth the Early Start?

I would include it again in a short Atacama trip, but I would go much better prepared for the cold. The geothermal landscape and the stops around it made the early alarm worthwhile for us.

It is a very different outing from an afternoon in Moon Valley. You leave before dawn, travel into the high-altitude landscape and need to be comfortable with a cold start. If those practical details sound difficult, take them seriously rather than treating the tour as an easy add-on to any itinerary.

Our visit was in early February. Current visitor rules have changed since then, so I have separated our experience from the practical information to check today.

What Our El Tatio Morning Looked Like

Part of the excursion Our experience What I would do differently
Before departure Getting ready at 4:24am Lay out warm clothes and pack the day bag the night before
Journey Around an hour and a half from San Pedro on our outing Keep layers within reach, not in a bag you cannot access
Geothermal visit Very cold, around freezing during our visit Bring gloves, a warm hat and a better jacket
Breakfast and return Eggs, bread, avocado, scenery and additional stops Check your own tour's meal and stop list
Afterwards Back to our San Pedro base Leave room for a slower afternoon

Those times describe our day, not a fixed timetable for every departure. Check your pickup time directly, including whether the driver collects from your property or a meeting point.

Breakfast and the stops on the way back

Breakfast was a lovely part of our excursion: eggs, bread and avocado with mountain scenery around us. After the cold start, I was very happy to sit down and eat!

We also had a viewpoint stop, visited a village and saw flamingos. I liked that there was more to the morning than travelling all that way for one short stop.

Two flamingos feeding in shallow water on our Atacama outing

At the village stop we tried a llama skewer. It is such a small detail compared with the huge landscape, but it is one of those things that makes the morning feel like our trip rather than a list of attractions.

Return stops and breakfast arrangements differ between operators. If the flamingos or a particular village are important to you, check the actual itinerary rather than assuming they are part of every El Tatio booking.

What to Wear for El Tatio

Warm layers are essential planning, not an optional extra because you are visiting a desert. I felt underdressed, and I would not make the same decision again.

I would bring a warm jacket over layers, a hat, gloves, long trousers and comfortable closed shoes. Have sunglasses and sun protection as well, because a freezing start and strong daylight can be part of the same outing.

The park operator describes El Tatio at about 4,320 metres. That helps explain why the conditions are not the same as the afternoon you spent walking around San Pedro. Do not use a town forecast as your only packing guide.

I would put water and anything I need in a small day bag before going to bed. It is much easier to think clearly about that at dinner time than while trying to leave before dawn.

Booking an El Tatio Tour and Checking the Price

We joined an organised excursion rather than driving ourselves. For our short stay, that made the early start and transport simpler.

You can compare excursions from San Pedro de Atacama here. Select an El Tatio listing and read what it includes. This is a browse link for available options, not a claim that each operator is the one we travelled with.

I would check:

  • Collection point and time, including the return time.
  • Park admission, which may be separate from the excursion price.
  • Breakfast and where it is served.
  • Guide language and group size.
  • Return stops and whether they depend on conditions.
  • Age restrictions, health guidance and cancellation terms.

The official tariff page listed CLP15,000 general admission when checked in September, with card or bank-transfer payment. Confirm the current tariff before travelling and ask whether your tour has already included it. That is the published entrance price, not the price we paid for our full excursion.

For my wider travel payments I use Wise, but I would still confirm what the operator and individual stops accept. One attraction accepting cards does not mean every stop on the excursion will.

Current El Tatio Rules and Altitude Safety

The operator's rules effective from March came after our visit. They require visitors to stay on marked routes, prohibit touching geothermal water or fumaroles and do not allow food preparation or consumption inside the park. Children aged zero to eight are not permitted under those rules. Check the official visitor regulations before making plans for a family visit.

The official tariff page also states that the thermal pool is not open. Do not book this outing expecting a swim based on an old blog or photograph.

Breakfast on an excursion does not necessarily mean breakfast inside the geothermal park. Ask your tour company how it handles meals under the current rules.

Take the altitude seriously

This is not medical advice based on whether we personally felt all right. The CDC's high-altitude guidance explains gradual acclimatisation and notes that fitness does not protect against altitude illness.

We put El Tatio after time in San Pedro, but a few nights in town are not a guarantee of being acclimatised for a higher excursion. Discuss personal health concerns with a clinician, tell your guide if you feel unwell and do not keep ascending with symptoms of altitude illness. Severe or worsening symptoms need urgent attention and descent.

Where to Stay Before the Early Pickup

We stayed at Hostal Anpaymi Atacama, with a private bathroom, a comfortable bed and a shared kitchen. That was exactly the sort of simple base we wanted between outings.

Where we stayed

Hostal Anpaymi Atacama

Our three-night base with a comfortable private room, our own bathroom and a shared kitchen. The simple, practical stay I would start with for a tour-based visit.

Tell your accommodation about the early start and confirm the driver's collection point. If breakfast is part of your room rate, ask whether anything is possible before departure rather than expecting the normal breakfast service to be open.

Our San Pedro accommodation comparison has two other options, and the three-night itinerary shows how we fitted El Tatio around Valle de la Luna before continuing into Bolivia.

FAQs About an El Tatio Geysers Tour

How early does an El Tatio tour start?

We were getting ready at 4:24am. Exact collection times depend on the operator and departure, so confirm yours directly and prepare the night before.

Is breakfast included?

It was on our excursion, but inclusions vary. Check the listing and ask where breakfast is served, as current park rules prohibit eating inside the geothermal park.

Can you swim at El Tatio?

The official tariff page currently states that the thermal pool is not open. Do not rely on older information promising a swim.

What should you wear?

Warm layers, a jacket, gloves, a hat and closed shoes are the choices I would make. We felt underdressed in near-freezing conditions on our visit.

Is El Tatio suitable for young children?

The park's rules effective March prohibit children aged zero to eight. Check the official regulations and discuss altitude concerns with a clinician before planning a family visit.

Final Thoughts: Would I Do El Tatio Again?

Yes. I enjoyed the whole morning, including the scenery and the stops on the return, not just the main attraction. I would simply treat the cold and altitude as central parts of planning it. A better jacket would have improved my morning considerably!
