4 Best Beaches in Zanzibar: Our Honest Comparison
I thought choosing a beach in Zanzibar would be the easy part. White sand, blue water, book somewhere lovely and you are done, right? Then we watched the sea retreat at Paje and turned up at Mtende at completely the wrong tide.
The beaches were beautiful, but they were not interchangeable. We spent 13 nights based in Paje and four in Nungwi during July, with trips to Jambiani and Mtende. That gave us very different beach days, from watching kites over Paje to sunset in Nungwi and riding along the sand in Jambiani!
These are the four Zanzibar beaches we visited, compared by what I would go back for. If I were choosing again, I would still split the trip between the southeast and the north rather than expect one beach to do everything.
Best beaches in Zanzibar: my quick answer
For a swimming-focused holiday, I would lean towards Nungwi. For a longer stay with a wide beach, cafés and a lively afternoon atmosphere, I would choose Paje. Jambiani is the southeast beach I would add for a quieter day, while Mtende is a tide-dependent outing rather than the base I would build our whole trip around.
That isn't a promise that Nungwi is safe to swim at every hour. Conditions still matter. It is the relative difference we noticed compared with the much more obvious retreat of the water on the east coast.

For accommodation first, I would compare Siri Beach Lodge in Nungwi and Chokoro House in Paje, our two small-property bases. There are photo cards and a Jambiani alternative further down, or use our Zanzibar area guide for the full stay comparison.
1. Nungwi Beach: my pick for swimming and sunset evenings
Nungwi felt different from Paje straight away. We had four nights there, and getting down to the water was easier than planning everything around the big east-coast low tide.
If somebody told me their main holiday plan was a beach, a swim and somewhere lovely for sunset, this is the one I would point them towards first. I would still check the exact stretch outside a hotel, though. “Nungwi” covers more than one little patch of sand, and a beachfront address doesn't tell you everything about access or nearby boat activity.
What I loved about Nungwi
The evenings were such a highlight! We had sunset at Maisha, time at Bobo and those beach scenes with football and acrobatics going on around us. I loved that there was something happening without needing to book a whole activity.
This is the beach I would choose if you want the day to roll into the evening. Watch the water, find somewhere for dinner and stay out for sunset, rather than driving back across the island afterwards.
What I would keep in mind
Nungwi wasn't an empty strip of sand with nobody around. Parts felt lively, with restaurants and activity along the beach. I enjoyed that, but if you want complete quiet, choose the precise hotel setting carefully rather than assuming every north-coast stay feels secluded.
Ask locally about that day's conditions and stay clear of boat routes, even when the water looks inviting.
Our four-night Nungwi guide has the places we ate, stayed and went out. This is my swimming-and-sunset choice, not automatically my favourite base for every kind of traveller.
2. Paje Beach: best for a longer stay and beach atmosphere
Paje is where we settled in for 13 nights, and I can absolutely see why people stay longer here. There is a huge stretch of white sand, places to eat and a beach that changes through the day.
For us, travelling for months at a time isn't the same as being in holiday mode every minute. We like having somewhere we can settle, find our favourite food and have a bit of routine. Paje gave us that, with beach walks and days out around the southeast coast in between.
The tide is part of choosing Paje
The water went a long way out. We watched the beach change dramatically, and that matters if your mental picture is walking out of your room and straight into deep enough water for a swim.
Low tide didn't make Paje an ugly beach. It made it a different beach day. I would use that time for a walk or food, then plan water time around the tide and local conditions instead of getting frustrated with it.
Do check the tide for your actual dates. It moves through the day, so somebody else's “go in the morning” advice isn't a reliable plan for your week.
Why I liked the afternoons
During our July stay there was wind, kites over the water and so much happening along the sand. Around Shanga we saw football and acrobatics, and it was lovely just sitting with food and watching the beach come to life!
We watched the kites rather than taking lessons. If kitesurfing is the reason you are coming, speak to a local school about your level and the conditions rather than taking our beach-watching experience as lesson advice.
I would choose Paje over Nungwi for a longer southeast-coast base with day trips and plenty of places to eat. I would choose Nungwi over Paje if easy access to swimming was the main priority. Our Paje guide has our favourite food stops and the day-to-day details.
3. Jambiani Beach: the slower southeast-coast day I loved
Jambiani was a lovely change from our Paje routine. White sand, palms, places to stop by the water and a quieter feel during our visit. I would happily put it on the list even if you are already staying on the southeast coast.
Our visit included riding along the beach and into the water. The setting was unreal! It is one of those memories I can picture immediately when I think about Zanzibar.
I wouldn't book any animal activity just because the photos look good, though. If you are considering a ride, ask about horse care, rider suitability and conditions on the day. The beach is worth visiting without doing a ride at all.
Make it a beach-and-lunch day
We ate at Jiwe Swahili Kitchen, with fish curry and chicken biryani, and my rating was 10 out of 10. It was such a good part of the day! A walk on the beach and a meal like that is plenty of reason to come down from Paje.
Jambiani still has the east coast's tide changes. I wouldn't move here thinking you have escaped the tidal issue completely. I would choose it for a slower setting, then organise swimming around what the water is doing.
If I wanted to stay rather than visit, Be Zanzibar Boutique Hotel is one I would compare for its ocean-facing pool and boutique rooms. It is in southern Jambiani, so look at the location alongside the places you want to eat and visit.
4. Mtende Beach: beautiful setting, but learn from our timing
Mtende was the beach day we didn't get right. It took us around 45 minutes to ride there from Paje, and we arrived at low tide expecting something rather different from what was in front of us.
The water had pulled away, there were lots of sea urchins and it wasn't the easy swim I had imagined. We didn't stay long enough for the tide to change. That is on us, but it is exactly why I would check the tide before making the journey again.
I would treat Mtende as a cove outing with careful timing, not a guaranteed swimming stop. A higher tide also doesn't automatically mean safe conditions, so ask for current local advice rather than choosing a time just because it will look better in a photo.
The starfish encounter I didn't love
We also saw a starfish photo setup. I asked about the starfish, and the man we spoke to said they had been brought from another beach. That was what we were told on that visit, not a claim about everybody working around Mtende.
It didn't sit well with me. I would skip handled-wildlife photo stops and leave marine animals where they are. You don't need that picture to have enjoyed Zanzibar.
Mtende is still part of this comparison because we went and it taught us something useful. I am not going to call it our best swimming beach when our actual visit was a lesson in checking conditions first. You can see the stop in our southeast-coast vlog below.
Where I would stay for these Zanzibar beaches
I would split a longer trip between Paje and Nungwi, as we did, then visit Jambiani and Mtende from the southeast. On a shorter holiday, choose the beach experience you care about most rather than losing too much time moving between hotels.
These are the stays I would start with: two places we used, plus the Jambiani option I would compare for a slower beachfront stay. Check the total and room category for your dates rather than assuming one property is always the cheapest.
Chokoro House
A pool, garden and a walk to the beach. An easy base for days out and eating around Paje.
Siri Beach Lodge
A spacious room and a short walk to Nungwi beach. This is the base we used for exploring the town and heading out for meals.
Be Zanzibar Boutique Hotel
The ocean-facing pool and boutique rooms make this one I would compare for a slower stay. It is in southern Jambiani, so plan transport for meals in Paje.

How I would plan a Zanzibar beach trip
Choose your bases before your day trips. Nungwi and Paje gave us different experiences, which is why I liked having both. Jambiani fitted naturally into our time on the southeast coast.
Check tides as well as weather. Sunshine doesn't tell you how far you will be walking to the water. Our best time to visit Zanzibar guide explains what July was like for us and how I would think about the seasons.
Leave a day that isn't about beaches. Our Stone Town and Prison Island day guide is the change of pace I would add between coast stays. It made the trip feel like more than a collection of beach stops.
Keep boat trips separate from beach rankings. We also went out around Mnemba, but a boat excursion is a different booking from choosing a beach you can walk onto. Final thoughts: which Zanzibar beach would I go back to?
Paje for settling into a routine, Nungwi for those sunset evenings and easier water access, and Jambiani for another lovely day by the sea. Mtende is the one I would approach differently, with the tide checked before we left!
There isn't one beach that wins every category. Pick the one that matches the holiday you actually want, then give yourself enough time to enjoy it.
