Weligama, Sri Lanka: The Best Base for a First Trip
If you are coming to Sri Lanka's south coast once and you want one base, make it Weligama.
I say that having rated somewhere else higher. Hiriketiya is my favourite town on this coast and it is not close, but Weligama is the one I would actually tell a first-timer to book, because it is central, the food is the best anywhere on the coast, and Mirissa and Ahangama are both a short ride away.
Is Weligama Worth Visiting? My Quick Answer
Yes, and it is the base I would build a two week trip around. I rated it 9/10.
It is the best all-rounder on this coast: the gentlest surf in Sri Lanka for learning, the widest choice of places to eat, a real digital-nomad scene, and a position that puts most of the good day trips within twenty minutes.
One honest thing up front. The main beach at Weligama is not the prettiest on this coast, in our opinion. You base here for the position and the food, not for the sand.
Learning to Surf in Weligama
This is the thing Weligama is genuinely best at in the whole country.
The bay is a huge protected horseshoe, which means the swell arrives soft and slow rather than dumping. There are lessons on every corner and boards for hire all along the front. I had a few people message me asking whether the south coast works for beginners, and Weligama is the most forgiving setup we saw anywhere.
Daniel surfed most days. I mostly watched from a cafe, which I also recommend.

Nomad is the one. We came three times in five days and had our last breakfast in Weligama there before driving to Yala. The pumpkin toast had a chokehold on me.
Chef Akila Kitchen comes with a story. Their original restaurant was destroyed in a gas explosion, and the chef has been cooking out of the family home while rebuilding. We shared a massaman curry made in an open kitchen in front of us and it was one of the best things we ate in Sri Lanka. Check they are still operating before you go, because we were there in April 2025.
Day Trips From Weligama
This is the real argument for basing here.
Mirissa, ten minutes away, is where Coconut Tree Hill is. Go at sunrise rather than sunset. We did sunset first and it was heaving, then came back just before six the next morning and there were two other people on the whole hill!
Ahangama, twenty minutes the other way, is quieter, with rooftops and emptier beaches. Kai is up there.
Galle is about forty minutes west, and I will admit we rode through it rather than giving it a proper day, which I regret.
Things to Do in Weligama
- Learn to surf. The reason most people come
- Coconut Tree Hill at sunrise, ten minutes away in Mirissa
- Ride to Ahangama for the rooftops and the quieter sand
- Work from a cafe. This is the best town on the coast for it
- Go to a jungle party if one is on while you are there
What It Cost Us
Eight nights at A$30.50 per person per night, which was our cheapest sustained stay of the entire trip and one of my favourite places we stayed.
Food is where the money went instead. Across the whole trip our food and drink came to A$58.23 per person per day, more than our accommodation, and Weligama is where a lot of that happened. Full breakdown here.
Where to Stay in Weligama
Silvas Surf Home
Weligama is a surf town first, and staying somewhere set up for it changes the mornings. Being able to walk down with a board rather than organising transport is the difference between surfing three times and surfing every day.
Komorebi Weligama
Weligama town can be busier and noisier than Hiriketiya, so a bit of separation from the main road is worth paying for here more than it is further along the coast.
The Secret Guesthouse, Mirissa
Ten minutes away, and sleeping in Mirissa is how you get Coconut Tree Hill to yourself at sunrise rather than riding over in the dark.
Getting Around
We had a moped for the whole trip, A$80.16 for 13 days, which is about A$6.17 a day and the best value thing we bought in Sri Lanka. Weligama is the town where it pays off most, because Mirissa and Ahangama are both short rides.
Bring a physical international driving licence, because they will ask. And take cash out early. On the morning we left Weligama we tried three ATMs before one worked, and we needed the cash to settle up on the mopeds before we could leave. We use the Wise card so the withdrawals do not sting.
What I Loved
The food. More choice here than anywhere else on the coast, and Nomad is genuinely excellent.
The position. Mirissa and Ahangama on the doorstep and Galle within reach.
How easy it is to work here. The best cafes and the most reliable setup for it.
The price. A$30.50 each per night was our cheapest sustained stay and it did not feel like it.
What I Didn't Love
The main beach. It is not the prettiest on this coast and I would rather say so than pretend.
It is busier and noisier than the smaller towns further along.
Ice Weligama has closed. We did a sauna and ice bath here on a rainy day, A$21.41 each, and the ice bath was 0.4 degrees and the coldest thing I have ever stepped into. It was the perfect wet-afternoon answer and it is not there any more.

Final Thoughts
Weligama is the sensible answer, and I mean that as a compliment.
It is not the prettiest beach or my favourite town, but it is the one that makes a two week trip work. Base here for five nights, learn to surf, eat extremely well, ride to Mirissa for sunrise, and then give the rest of your days to the far south.
