Where to Stay in Buenos Aires: Palermo Soho vs Hollywood

Where should you stay in Buenos Aires for the first time? Palermo is my pick, especially if you want cafés, restaurants, boutiques and an area that still feels good when you are not sightseeing. We split 18 nights between Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood, so this is not a list made from hotel descriptions. We actually lived in both.

If you want the shortest answer, choose Palermo Soho for a first trip and Palermo Hollywood for a longer stay, more space and easy access to restaurants and nightlife. They are next to each other, so you can walk between them.

Why we chose Palermo for our first visit

Buenos Aires is huge. Choosing a neighbourhood matters because your stay is not only about distance to landmarks. It changes where you get coffee, where you eat at night and how the city feels when you step outside.

We were in Buenos Aires from 2 to 20 January 2026. Our first apartment was in Palermo Soho for seven nights, then we moved to Palermo Hollywood for eleven nights. That split ended up being perfect because we could compare both areas without guessing.

Palermo worked for us because we are full-time travellers, not in holiday mode every night. We love eating out, but we also deliberately book apartments with kitchens so we can cook, have some home normality and spend less than we would eating every meal in a restaurant. Both sides of Palermo gave us that balance.

It was also very walkable. We regularly reached our cafés, restaurants, gyms and shops on foot, then used Uber when we wanted to cross the city. Our second host spent about 30 minutes explaining Buenos Aires and gave us a handmade neighbourhood book with maps. That little welcome made the area feel like home very quickly.

Our verdict: Palermo Soho is the easiest choice for most first-time visitors. Palermo Hollywood wins if your priority is a longer apartment stay, restaurants and a slightly more everyday rhythm.

Those accommodation totals are what we paid for our January 2026 apartments, not a promise of current prices. Our Palermo Hollywood apartment was our favourite of the two and worked out cheaper per night. That says more about the individual apartment than it does about every property in each neighbourhood.

What staying in Palermo Soho was actually like

Palermo Soho is the version of Palermo most first-time visitors picture. There are leafy streets, café tables, independent shops, colourful corners and plenty happening around Plaza Serrano.

The biggest advantage is how easy it is. You can leave your room without a plan and find breakfast, coffee, dinner or somewhere to browse. It suited our first week because we were learning the city and did not want every meal or coffee to require research.

It is also the better choice if shopping is high on your list. We spent afternoons wandering its boutiques and vintage stores, then stopped for food whenever something looked good. The trade-off is that the busiest streets can feel lively and noisy at night, so read recent room reviews if you are a light sleeper.

Choose Palermo Soho if you:

• are visiting Buenos Aires for the first time
• want cafés and shops close together
• prefer stepping outside into the action
• only have a few days and want an easy base

What staying in Palermo Hollywood was actually like

Palermo Hollywood sits just north of Soho. It gets its name from the television and film businesses that moved into the area, but as a visitor you will probably notice the restaurants, bars and apartment buildings first.

Our second apartment here was our favourite. We had settled into Buenos Aires by then, knew our regular spots and loved having eleven nights to live more normally. We cooked, went to the gym, worked and still had brilliant restaurants within walking distance. It felt exactly right for our full-time travel rhythm.

Hollywood is not silent or empty. Streets around the main restaurant and nightlife pockets can be busy. The difference is that the area can feel more residential once you move away from those strips. It suited us because we wanted somewhere to live, not only somewhere to sightsee from.

Choose Palermo Hollywood if you:

• are staying for a week or longer
• want an apartment with a kitchen
• care more about restaurants and nightlife than boutiques
• like a neighbourhood that can feel more everyday between its busy streets

So, which one should you book?

For a three or four-night first trip, I would book Palermo Soho. It places the easiest parts of Palermo around you and removes a lot of decision-making.

For a week or more, I would compare apartments across both Soho and Hollywood. They are close enough that the quality, kitchen, noise reviews and exact street matter more than the label. Our Hollywood apartment was the better stay, but I would happily return to either area.

The useful boundary to remember is Avenida Juan B. Justo, which broadly separates Soho and Hollywood. Do not reject a great property because it is a few blocks on the “wrong” side. Check its walking distance to the places you care about instead.

Where to stay in Palermo Soho

We stayed in an apartment nearby, so I looked for the same things that mattered during our own stay: an excellent location, consistently strong reviews, a kitchen and good value for two people. I also checked how highly each apartment appeared in Booking.com results and read through the recent comments rather than relying on the headline score alone.

A kitchen genuinely matters to us. Travelling full time is different from being in holiday mode every night, and cooking gives us a little home normality while usually costing less than eating out. Buenos Aires is especially good for it because the butchers and fresh produce are brilliant.

Monoambiente Borges Palermo Soho: the better-value apartment

Monoambiente Borges Palermo Soho is my better-value Soho pick. When I checked, it scored 9.8 from 63 reviews, with guests repeatedly mentioning the location, cleanliness and how well equipped it was. The full kitchen, desk and balcony make it particularly practical if you are staying for more than a few nights.

Boutique Design Studio in Palermo Soho: the nicer apartment

Boutique Design Studio in Palermo Soho is the nicer option I would compare against it. It scored 9.5 from 146 reviews when I checked, with a 9.8 location score. The kitchenette, washing machine, rooftop pool and terrace make it feel better suited to real life than a standard hotel room, while still giving you something special to come home to.

Where to stay in Palermo Hollywood

Cool Loft en Palermo: the better-value apartment

Cool Loft en Palermo is my better-value Hollywood pick. It scored 9.3 from 30 reviews when I checked, and recent guests highlighted its location, comfort and helpful host. You still get a kitchen, washing machine, balcony and rooftop pool, which is a lot of useful apartment living without moving into the higher price bracket.

Trendy Apartments in Palermo Hollywood by BueRentals: the nicer apartment

Trendy Apartments in Palermo Hollywood by BueRentals is the stronger treat-yourself option. It scored 9.8 from 126 reviews when I checked, and the recent comments consistently praised the design, cleanliness, kitchen and neighbourhood feel. You also get a balcony, pool, gym and garden, so it has the comfort of an apartment with a few hotel-style extras.

Hotel prices move constantly in Buenos Aires, especially around weekends and events. Open a few options for your exact dates rather than treating any one property as the automatic winner.

What about Recoleta, San Telmo and Microcentro?

We visited all three, but we did not stay overnight in them. Here is how I would think about each after spending time there.

Recoleta

Recoleta is the alternative I would give someone who wants elegant architecture, museums and a more polished city-break feel. The city's official tourism site calls it its most elegant neighbourhood, and that matches how it felt walking around the grand avenues, cemetery and galleries.

It is beautiful, central and likely the better fit for travellers who want a classic hotel experience. It just did not match our café, apartment and neighbourhood routine as naturally as Palermo.

San Telmo

San Telmo has cobbled streets, antiques, tango history and some of the city's strongest character. We loved visiting on Sunday when the market filled Calle Defensa and Plaza Dorrego.

I would consider it if atmosphere and historic buildings matter more to you than having Palermo's café and restaurant density every day. Check recent comments about the exact street, especially if you expect to return late at night.

Microcentro

Microcentro places you near Plaza de Mayo, Teatro Colón, Avenida 9 de Julio and many classic sights. It makes logistical sense for a very short trip.

For us, it felt more like an area to explore during the day than the place we wanted as home. If you have four nights or more, I think Palermo gives you a better neighbourhood experience.

Is Palermo safe to stay in?

We felt safe in Palermo during our January 2026 stay, including when walking between Soho and Hollywood. That is our experience, not a guarantee that crime does not happen.

The one theft we personally saw in Buenos Aires involved a phone being taken from a table. Keep your phone and bag secure, use well-lit streets at night and check current official travel advice before your trip. The exact street and your habits matter more than a blanket “safe” label.

San Telmo is a good choice if historic streets, tango and the Sunday market are your priorities. We loved visiting it, but preferred Palermo as our everyday base.

Where should you stay without a car?

Palermo, Recoleta, San Telmo and Microcentro can all work without a car. Buenos Aires has public transport, taxis and ride-hailing, and we combined lots of walking with inexpensive Uber trips.

My honest recommendation

If this is your first trip, book Palermo Soho and do not overthink it. If you find a much better apartment a few blocks into Palermo Hollywood, book that instead. The two areas are neighbours, and the exact property can matter more than the name.

Our seven nights in Soho helped us fall for Buenos Aires. Our eleven nights in Hollywood made it feel like home. That is why Palermo is still the first place I would search when we return.
