Trollstigen by campervan: our drive and viewpoint stop

Trollstigen hairpin road viewed from above

Trollstigen was the road we kept talking about after the trip. The views were incredible, but meeting a bus on a narrow section was a very different sort of memorable! We drove it in Posty, stopped at the lookout and finished the day at Mjelva. Here's what I'd want to know before doing it again.

Trollstigen was one of the most memorable drives on our September 2026 trip. It was also a day where I was quite happy to be in the passenger seat! Daniel drove our manual, left-hand-drive campervan through the bends, and we stopped to look back over the road from the viewpoint.

Check the road before planning the day

Start with the official Geiranger–Trollstigen route information. This is a seasonal mountain road. Our trip footage shows the conditions we experienced, not whether you can drive it today. Check current closures and the suitability of the route for your vehicle before setting off.

How it fitted into our fjords loop

We came from Geiranger, taking in Ørnesvingen, the Eidsdal–Linge ferry and Gudbrandsjuvet before continuing towards Trollstigen. That is already a day with several stops, so I wouldn't add a long hike just because the map makes everything look close.

The official scenic route includes a ferry crossing. Look up the timetable for your date and leave space for waiting, rather than treating a driving-time estimate as a promised arrival time. If the mountain road is closed, check an alternative route before choosing where to sleep.

The bus encounter we still talk about

At one narrow section Daniel had to reverse to let a bus through. The views were incredible, but that moment brought us straight back to the practical side of a campervan trip. You need to know your vehicle and feel comfortable manoeuvring it.

When comparing a rental through MyCamper, look beyond the bed and the pretty interior. Check the dimensions and transmission, ask the owner about the vehicle and be honest about what you want to drive. A roomier van isn't automatically the easier choice for this kind of road trip.

Make time for the viewpoint

The stop at the top gave us the chance to appreciate what we'd just driven. Looking down at the bends is a very different experience from watching the next corner through the windscreen. Leave room for the viewpoint instead of scheduling the whole day around getting through the road.

Use the signed visitor parking and marked paths. The scenery can change completely with cloud and rain, so take a warm layer even if the van felt comfortable. If visibility is poor, don't count on getting the wide-open view from our photographs.

Coffee before the climb, a campsite afterwards

Gudbrandsjuvet was a lovely break along our approach. We had coffee and hot chocolate beside those glass walls, with the gorge outside. For me, it was part of what made the day enjoyable rather than simply a road to tick off.

We stayed at Mjelva Camping near Åndalsnes afterwards, surrounded by mountains. Reaching a campsite with time to settle in is worth protecting. On the next part of the trip, Sødahlhuset in Åndalsnes gave us our favourite warm cinnamon bun. I would happily leave space for that again.
